Laur\u00e8ne est\u00a0\u201cJunior Professional in Advanced Fluid Dynamics and Propulsion Engineering \u00e0 l&rsquo;Agence Spatiale Europ\u00e9enne\u201d; Alice est \u201cPhD candidate in Quantum Computing and Aerospace Engineer specialised in Applied Mathematics\u201d. L\u2019objet de Womars est: \u201cTo Promote the representation of women in the human space exploration field\u201d.<\/p><p>Tous les \u00e9tudiants impliqu\u00e9s dans ce projet ont obtenu d\u2019excellentes notes pour le travail r\u00e9alis\u00e9.<\/p><p>Chaque ann\u00e9e s\u2019est conclue par une pr\u00e9sentation dans un grand rassemblement scientifique et ing\u00e9nieurial\u00a0: GLEX 2021 (Saint Petersbourg), IAC 2022 (Paris), l\u2019AEC 2023 (Lausanne), IAC 2024 (Milan).<\/p><p>L\u2019\u00e9tude a \u00e9t\u00e9 pouss\u00e9e assez loin mais la r\u00e9flexion reste ouverte et on peut toujours progresser. Par ailleurs le cadre technologique \u00e9volue toujours. Apr\u00e8s lecture des documents joints les \u00e9tudiants int\u00e9ress\u00e9s pourront voir des points qui m\u00e9ritent encore d\u2019\u00eatre approfondis ou retravaill\u00e9s en fonction des avanc\u00e9es dans divers domaines. Nous attendons leurs propositions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2082cf elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"a2082cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e149ff e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"4e149ff\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-02c6391 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"02c6391\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Note pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e \u00e0 la direction d'<i>e<\/i>Space ayant d\u00e9clench\u00e9 l'\u00e9tude de faisabilit\u00e9 :<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d472c64 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d472c64\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Depuis 2020, suivant la suggestion de Pierre Brisson, pr\u00e9sident de l\u2019association, des \u00e9tudiants de niveau Master de l\u2019EPFL travaillent sur la faisabilit\u00e9 d\u2019un dirigeable robotique martien, un sujet difficile entre tous mais passionnant.<\/p><p>Le sujet est difficile car la densit\u00e9 de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re de Mars, de 615 pascals de pression au sol \u00e0 l\u2019altitude moyenne (celle du \u00ab\u00a0datum\u00a0\u00bb, \u00e9quivalent \u00e0 notre niveau de la mer), ne peut offrir que peu de diff\u00e9rence exploitable avec une enveloppe gonfl\u00e9e au gaz le plus l\u00e9ger possible, l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne.<\/p><p>Le sujet est passionnant, justement \u00e0 cause de ces difficult\u00e9s et aussi pour l\u2019utilit\u00e9 qu\u2019il pr\u00e9sente\u00a0: la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019explorer \u00e0 faible vitesse et pendant une longue dur\u00e9e les traits de relief les plus inaccessibles, murs, pentes fortes et reliefs les plus accident\u00e9s de la plan\u00e8te Mars, \u00e0 l\u2019approche desquels nul v\u00e9hicule terrestre ne pourra s\u2019aventurer avant tr\u00e8s longtemps.<\/p><p>Dans cette rubrique vous allez pouvoir suivre la progression de l\u2019\u00e9tude que supervisent Pierre Brisson et Claude Nicollier, maintenant pour la quatri\u00e8me ann\u00e9e cons\u00e9cutives, avec la collaboration pendant les deux premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de deux jeunes femmes ing\u00e9nieures de grande qualit\u00e9, sp\u00e9cialistes en A\u00e9rospatiale et membres de WoMars, Alice Barthe et Laur\u00e8ne Delsupexhe.<\/p><p>Comme vous le verrez \u00e0 la lecture de ces documents, ann\u00e9e apr\u00e8s ann\u00e9e, la r\u00e9flexion et le travail permettent d\u2019affiner les concepts, d\u2019\u00e9valuer leur pertinence, \u00e9ventuellement de les faire \u00e9voluer ou de les abandonner pour d\u2019autres. Les id\u00e9es pr\u00e9con\u00e7ues ne sont pas toujours (ou souvent\u00a0?) les meilleures\u00a0!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b0aad2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b0aad2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Un v\u00e9hicule volant \u00ab\u00a0all\u00e9g\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb par la force d\u2019Archim\u00e8de pour explorer la surface de Mars<\/b><\/p><p><b>A. Un besoin qui part des constatations suivantes :<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p><p>1) Difficult\u00e9 de progression en surface de la plan\u00e8te du fait des obstacles naturels (pierres coupantes, rochers plus ou moins volumineux, escarpements, falaises, pentes fortes, sables mouvants)\u00a0;<\/p><p>2) Impossibilit\u00e9 d\u2019acc\u00e9der, en cas de terrain difficile, \u00e0 des sites int\u00e9ressants aper\u00e7us \u00e0 distance;<\/p><p>3) Risque de \u00ab\u00a0passer \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb sans les voir de sites int\u00e9ressants et vitesse de progression lente avec un choix de parcours difficile, en raison d\u2019un horizon en surface souvent limit\u00e9, coupl\u00e9 \u00e0 une pr\u00e9cision toujours insuffisante des satellites ;<\/p><p>4) Difficult\u00e9 de l\u2019observation lat\u00e9rale \u00e0 partir des satellites pour examiner les nombreux \u00ab murs \u00bb naturels martiens (flancs de crat\u00e8res, falaises des rifts, bords des vall\u00e9es). Ces murs sont potentiellement riches d\u2019enseignements plan\u00e9tologiques par leurs strates et par les \u00e9coulements qui y ont laiss\u00e9 des traces. L\u2019observation pourrait \u00e9galement r\u00e9v\u00e9ler l\u2019ouverture de grottes qui donneraient acc\u00e8s \u00e0 des endroits prot\u00e9g\u00e9s, possibles refuges d\u2019une forme de vie martienne ou abris de futures implantations humaines.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>5) Int\u00e9r\u00eat de pouvoir se poser et repartir n\u2019importe o\u00f9 \u00e0 la surface de la plan\u00e8te, pour collecter des \u00e9chantillons ou d\u00e9poser un instrument.<\/p><p><b>Il faut donc pouvoir explorer Mars depuis l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, \u00e0 tr\u00e8s faible altitude, se poser et repartir<\/b>.<\/p><p><b>B. La sustentation a\u00e9rodynamique seule n\u2019est pas la solution\u00a0:<\/b><\/p><p>1) Faible pression atmosph\u00e9rique (611 pascals en moyenne, 70 Pa au sommet du Mont Olympus et 1155 Pa au fond du bassin d\u2019Hellas), avec variations importantes sur 24 heures (-80\u00b0C la nuit \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9quateur).<\/p><p>2) De ce fait, probl\u00e8me de stabilit\u00e9 des plus lourds que l\u2019air lors des changements de direction.<\/p><p>3) De ce fait, vitesse horizontale n\u00e9cessairement tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9e pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer une portance a\u00e9rodynamique\u00a0; \u00e9gale \u00e0 5,5 fois la vitesse sur Terre (en prenant en compte la gravit\u00e9 et la masse volumique de l\u2019air martien). L\u2019absence de pistes pour d\u00e9coller et atterrir d\u00e9savantage les v\u00e9hicules utilisant cette portance. Le syst\u00e8me quadshot peut y rem\u00e9dier mais le probl\u00e8me \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique reste entier (voir ci-dessous).<\/p><p>5) Energie rare et d\u2019approvisionnement difficile, sauf \u00e9nergie solaire (en excluant les nuits, les hautes latitudes en hiver et les p\u00e9riodes de temp\u00eates de poussi\u00e8re) ; la r\u00e9serve d\u2019ergols repr\u00e9sente un volume et une masse importants et implique des vols de courte dur\u00e9e.<\/p><p><b>C. La portance a\u00e9rostatique doit faire partie de la solution :<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p><p>1) Les v\u00e9hicules \u00e0 d\u00e9collage vertical (h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re, quadshot) utilisant exclusivement la propulsion et la portance a\u00e9rodynamique offrent des avantages certains mais limit\u00e9s (temps et distance)\u00a0du fait des besoins en ergols et de leur masse qu\u2019il faut transporter.<\/p><p>2) Les v\u00e9hicules utilisant la portance a\u00e9rostatique (volumes ferm\u00e9s emplis d\u2019h\u00e9lium, d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne ou alternativement, de gaz carbonique chauff\u00e9) n\u2019ont pas ce d\u00e9savantage mais ont une capacit\u00e9 d\u2019emport limit\u00e9 compte tenu de la tr\u00e8s faible densit\u00e9 de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re martienne.<\/p><p>3) Cette faiblesse pourrait \u00eatre compens\u00e9e par la combinaison d\u2019une portance a\u00e9rostatique avec une portance a\u00e9rodynamique g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e par une propulsion horizontale, m\u00eame faible\u00a0: d\u00e9collage \u00e0 la verticale, par portance a\u00e9rostatique \u00e9ventuellement assist\u00e9e (syst\u00e8me \u00ab\u00a0quadshot\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab Mars gashopper \u00bb ? \u2013 concept Robert Zubrin)\u00a0puis d\u00e9placement horizontal, \u00ab\u00a0dirig\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, par propulsion g\u00e9n\u00e9rant une portance a\u00e9rodynamique.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>B. Contraintes :<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p><p>1) N\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019embarquer un minimum de masse\u00a0: enveloppe de l\u2019a\u00e9ronef + structure + syst\u00e8me de direction + syst\u00e8me de communication + moteur + syst\u00e8me d\u2019ancrage au sol + comburant\/carburant ou syst\u00e8me de captation d\u2019\u00e9nergie solaire + \u00e9quipements d\u2019observation (\u00ab\u00a0payload\u00a0\u00bb)\u00a0: cam\u00e9ra(s), spectrographe(s), laser(s), radar(s), syst\u00e8me de stockage de donn\u00e9es + \u00e9ventuellement, capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 collecter puis transporter des \u00e9chantillons. NB\u00a0: la gravit\u00e9 r\u00e9duite (0,38g) permet d\u2019emporter des instruments d\u2019un poids \u00e9videmment plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 sur Terre et la densit\u00e9 de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re de CO<sub>2<\/sub> est de 1,53 de celle de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re terrestre.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>2) N\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019utiliser les mat\u00e9riaux les plus l\u00e9gers possible pour r\u00e9aliser l\u2019a\u00e9ronef (enveloppe et \u00e9ventuelle structure porteuse) et les \u00e9quipements embarqu\u00e9s. Dans le m\u00eame esprit, n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de rechercher la miniaturisation des \u00e9quipements\u00a0;<\/p><p>3) N\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019utiliser des mat\u00e9riaux r\u00e9sistants pour limiter les risques de d\u00e9chirure de l\u2019enveloppe porteuse et les risques de rupture ou d\u00e9formation de la structure en cas d\u2019\u00e9chouage, volontaire ou non.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>4) N\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de concevoir un volume gonflable portable d\u2019une taille compatible avec (a) son transport depuis la Terre et les conditions de d\u00e9ploiements dans un environnement difficile, (b) les risques de prise au vent, m\u00eame si l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re est peu dense\u00a0;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>5) N\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de concevoir une \u00e9trave a\u00e9rodynamique, pour limiter la prise au vent et faciliter la direction.<\/p><p>6) privil\u00e9gier le gonflage \u00e0 l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne (moins rare que l\u2019h\u00e9lium et beaucoup plus l\u00e9ger que le CO<sub>2<\/sub> de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re). On ne risque pas son inflammation dans l\u2019air (absence d\u2019oxyg\u00e8ne) et on peut le trouver facilement sur Mars (sous-produit de l\u2019\u00e9lectrolyse de l\u2019eau pour obtenir de l\u2019oxyg\u00e8ne).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>7) Utiliser l\u2019\u00e9nergie solaire pour la propulsion et le fonctionnement des \u00e9quipements (film photovolta\u00efque recouvrant l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du volume porteur avec lumi\u00e8re parvenant au travers d\u2019une section transparente de l\u2019enveloppe\u00a0; concentration par un miroir \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du ballon cf. StratoBus de Thal\u00e8s Alenia Space). NB : l\u2019irradiance au niveau de l\u2019orbite martienne \u00e9gale environ la moiti\u00e9 de l\u2019irradiance au niveau de l\u2019orbite terrestre, avec de fortes variations saisonni\u00e8res (de 490 \u00e0 715 Watt\/m2 ) ;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>8) Utiliser \u00e9ventuellement l\u2019\u00e9nergie nucl\u00e9aire (g\u00e9n\u00e9rateurs isotopiques -RTG-) miniaturis\u00e9s : d\u00e9sint\u00e9gration de mat\u00e9riau radioactif, par exemple plutonium 238 (ou am\u00e9ricium 241 ? cf recherche Breakthrough Starshot) pour alimenter les \u00e9quipements n\u00e9cessaires au fonctionnement des \u00e9quipements d\u2019observation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>9) Adapter l\u2019architecture du dirigeable au potentiel des vents\u00a0(cf concept Zep\u2019lin de Renault)\u00a0: volume porteur en forme de voile, ailes pour accentuer la capacit\u00e9 de portance a\u00e9rodynamique.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>D. L\u2019objectif de l\u2019\u00e9tude serait :<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p><p>1) D\u00e9terminer la masse que pourrait soulever un dirigeable martien de taille raisonnable, c\u2019est \u00e0 dire transportable en masse et volume, d\u00e9gonfl\u00e9, dans un vaisseau spatial depuis la Terre tel que le BFR ou le SLS Block 2 Cargo de la NASA (130 tonnes en LEO, coiffe de 10 m\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre sur 31 m\u00e8tres de haut, volume utile 1800 m3 ), en fonction de la vitesse de d\u00e9placement horizontale qu\u2019on pourrait lui impulser (\u00e9valuation de la vitesse minimale n\u00e9cessaire \u00e0 la portance).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>2) En fonction de cette masse, voir quels instruments pourraient \u00eatre embarqu\u00e9s (cam\u00e9ras, spectrographes, radars, \u00e9ventuellement un mini rover) au-del\u00e0 des \u00e9quipements n\u00e9cessaires au fonctionnement du dirigeable et \u00e0 la communication avec celui-ci.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>2 bis) En fonction de la masse disponible, envisager que le ballon puisse \u00e9ventuellement se poser puis repartir. Cela permettrait de lib\u00e9rer au sol de petits robots capables d\u2019effectuer des pr\u00e9l\u00e8vements ou de continuer des observations, au sol ou en sous-sol (forages ou exploration de grottes). Possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019utiliser la chute de la temp\u00e9rature la nuit pour se poser (refroidissement du gaz porteur).<\/p><p>Id\u00e9alement, le dirigeable serait contr\u00f4l\u00e9 en temps r\u00e9el \u00e0 partir d\u2019une station habit\u00e9e \u00e0 la surface de la plan\u00e8te. Une mission command\u00e9e depuis la Terre serait \u00e9videmment plus difficile \u00e0 concevoir du fait du \u00ab time-lag \u00bb de 3 \u00e0 23 minutes r\u00e9sultant de la distance-lumi\u00e8re entre les plan\u00e8tes. Elle suppose beaucoup plus d\u2019autonomie du v\u00e9hicule pour, notamment, \u00e9viter les obstacles mais elle n\u2019est pas impossible.
